Tips for trips on the lower rhine

Kalkar (distance 5 km) with its historic market square, stepped gable houses, the mighty linden and the great Gothic city hall is a must for every tourist visitng the  Lower Rhine.
 

Die St. Nicholas Church, the Municipal. Museum and the mill at Calcar Kalkarer Mühle aHanselaerer gate are worthwhile visits, and shopping streets ideal for strolling.

Another worthwhile excursion is located directly on the Rhine former fisherman and sailor-town Grieth (distance 3 miles). The district levied in 1250 for the City of Kalkar has a medieval core with small urbanized marketplace. In addition to the three-aisled late Gothic parish church of St. Peter and Paul, the small home-museum and the promenade is well worth seeing.
 

In Bedburg-Hau-Moyland (distance 5 km) are all art lovers to their cost: The water tower (Wasserschloss Moyland) is one of the most important neo-Gothic Moyland castles in North Rhine-Westphalia. The museum houses important works of art of the 19th and 20 Century from the collection of the brothers van der Grinten and the world's largest collection of works by the artist Joseph Beuys.  Golfers beware: The country-club golf-Moyland (Land-Golf-Club Schloss Moyland e.V.) offers a 18-hole course and taster.

Rees am Rhein (distance 10 km) is the oldest city on the Lower Rhine. Of interest is the late medieval fortifications with walls, round tower and watchtowers. It also loads a beautiful Rhine promenade for walks.

In the former spa town of Bad Cleve (now: Kleve distance 14 km) there is much to see: the swan castle, the symbol of the county seat, the baroque gardens with an amphitheater, the Museum and the Museum Kurhaus Kleve BC Koekkoek-house.

A very special highlight will certainly be a trip to the frontier inspection trolley  (Grenzland Draisine).

The Klever Reichwald with well over 5,100 acres is the largest contiguous forest area in the Lower Rhine. A piece of nature with high recreational value. Whether on foot, by bicycle or on horseback, the Imperial Forest offers many opportunities.

Emmerich am Rhein (distance 15 km) offers boat trips, the Rhine Museum, Elten mountain overlooking the Rhine Valley, a 1000 year old church with Drususbrunnen, the castle Borghees, a mill, the coffee art museum and much more.

Water babies come in all year round EMBRICANA with indoor and outdoor pools and a 1,500 m² sauna area at all costs.

The pilgrimage  Goch ((distance 15 km) offers a remarkable stone gate, the Arnold-Janssen-house, the house of the five rings, the water mill and the monastery Graefenthal (Kloster Graefenthal) also an excellent starting point for canoe trips on the Niers. Also in Goch swimmers get their money: GochNess, a leisure pool with a spacious sauna landscape and water is highly recommended.

The town of Xanten distance 17 km) looks back on 2000 years of history. Sights: Archaeological Park Archäologischen Park with its Roman Museum, Cathedral of St. Victor, Cleves Gate, Kriemhild mill, etc., testify to the importance of the city during the Middle Ages.

For sports enthusiasts particularly suitable leisure center Xanten Freizeitzentrum Xanten and the location right on the Xanten South Seas Adventure park "Adventure Park Xanten". A water ski cable car offers the ultimate in water fun for beginners and advanced! In addition, fun boats, canoes and dinghies for hire. Beach chairs, lawn, a family beach, a nudist beach, play and activity areas, diving boards, beach islands and a wave pool leave nothing to be desired. A ship wreck in 12 meters depth invites divers to explore.

The town Kevelaer (distance 23 km) is known as the largest Marian shrine Northwest Europe. Some 200 listed buildings dominate the city Kevelaerer.

Only a few kilometers away is a special kind of theme park created: "Europe's largest peasant experience labyrinth." On more than 100.000qm offers Irrland game, learning, and Tobe attractions for the whole family.

All excursions are an excellent way over-developed and well-marked bike paths (Radwege) available!

The proximity to the Dutch border, also offers many other excursions, such as

Nijmegen distance 37 km) s the oldest city in the Netherlands. Many medieval buildings bear witness to the historic past. 

Arnheim ((distance 43 km) is a city full of contrasts. For example, there is next to the old town hall in Renaissance style, the new, modern town hall. Major Sights in and around Arnhem are the Nederlands Openluchtmuseum (open-air museum) and the Burger’s Zoo. Just outside of Arnhem, in Rozendaal, you will find the castle Rozendaal with the 'Bedriegertjes' (fraud). In and around the Bentinckstraat around you will find many small antique and craft shops.

Venlo (distance 50 km) is one of the greenest cities in Europe with a beautiful pedestrian zone where you can buy well. You'll also find several markets with cozy street cafes, and two museums: the Museum of Limburg and the Van Bommel van Dam Museum.
